April 30, 2014

Arrived in Banner , IL this afternoon. On the way here Brett Pullins, an old friend from Morton Junior and Morton Senior High was stopped off the side of Rt 24 between Kingston Mines, IL and Glasford, IL. I had noticed this white car off the side of the road thought it was a cop shooting radar; anyway, Brett gets out as I was passing him walking on the shoulder and says do I know you? I couldn't believe it! Hadn't seen Brett in years! We had a great talk and then he hands me some cash and told me that I should get a motel room in Banner. He knew from reading the blog from yesterday I would be on 24. So after hours of trudging at about 2 miles per hour I got into Banner. Got a room at the motel and a great meal of brisket, chicken and pulled pork at Boss Hogs. Unbelievable food! My hats off to Mike Arnold(Boss Hog) and his wife along with Annie Lynn(manager), Nick Hines(server/host)! Mike grew up in Mason City and knows virtually everyone from Mason City to Hopedale! The food was every bit as good as I have had in Texas on storm duty.

Annie has been managing restaurants since she was 18. She boards her 3 horses and rides a motorcycle. They are the best bunch of people I have met. Salt of the earth! Mike warned about the narrow shoulders on 24 from here to Lewiston. He gave me the name of the owners of a winery around where Dickson Mounds Road intersects with 24 where I might be able to camp tomorrow nite.

I took an hour long hotter than blazes shower and got into some clean clothes. Took a nap for 3 hrs. I am so burned out/tired/weak from carrying that back pack! Threw away additional things including my tomahawk some clothes and food...you know unessesary things like that! My shoulders and back are so sore! I'm so stiff I can't even bend down even without the backpack on. I fell asleep about 100 feet off the shoulder in the woods at Banner Marsh after laying down. It was cold about 44 degrees and windy with rain spitting at me from the west.

Got talking to Boss and his staff all note till closing. They are so generous they gave me a rack of smoked ribs, corn bread muffins, water and Pepsi for tomorrow! I'm blown away from how people are reacting to what I'm doing out here...and God keeps providing! Don't even need to ask Him.

Last night was horrible, it was raining, wind was howling and the tent collapsed at 2am sending rain inside. Ground was freezing and I my body would not stop shivering!

However, an amazing thing happened before I went to bed...Larry Dailey from the Mapelton Church drove over with my supper! Then Mary Milam her husband, Greg and 2 of their grandchildren drove by and we reminsed for an hour about old times. I worked with Mary at State Farm for 12 years and she was reading my blog and knew where I was staying last note...haven't seen her in years! Got to go and get some sleep before heading to Lewiston. Good night my friends!

April 29, 2014--Evening

Arrived at Mapelton, IL and decided to bed down at the Mapelton Church a small country church sitting atop Rt 24. A scattering of small working class homes are situated next to the church. I decided to bivouac here for the  night since the nearest next town has very few choices for overnighting it. Called the phone # on the front door for Pastor Keith Huff. Got permission to camp in the yard for the night. He told me his Associate Pastor would be dropping by to meet me. Asst Pastor Paul Odewaldt came by bearing gifts of sweet peppers, soda, bananas, pears, ice tea and Vienna sausage!! Wow. God provided just as He says He would! Its a testament to my lack of faith that I find it extraordinary that He would be looking out for me. Remember the sparrows and the Lilies of the field? Paul let me in the church to use the bathroom. Told me he may drop by later to check on me. Blessings on him the Pastor and this fellowship!!

April 29, 2014-Tuesday

Heading out from North Pekin, IL on my way to Banner, IL a distance of 18 miles more or less. Planning on camping on the grounds of the Fire Dept. Breakfast today consisted of raisin bread. Left at 8am for Banner. Bye to Logan and Matt and Ally my hosts/hostess. Ally left home at 6am for work at Eli's Coffee Shop in Morton. Its hard saying goodbye to Ally not knowing when we will see each other again. My son Andrew left for Denver last Friday where he plans on making his new home. Hopefully, I will arrive myself in Denver in 3 months. Its partly sunny now and in the 50s. Leaving during rush hour but I need to get an early start. The 70lb backpack will slow me down. This adventure is going to be a lot harder on my body than I anticipated. Oh well, that's life! Will post again tonight when I arrive in Banner, Lord willing of course.

Arrived at North Pekin

Arrived at Ally Schoenbein's home in North Pekin, IL. Between my send off at Eli's Coffee Shop and talking with Andrew Bazzati and Scott Witzig...and reconfiguring my 75 lb backpack the window closed too quickly to get to N. Pekin by nightfall. My mom insisted on driving me to Ally's and I agreed for safety purposes to cheat a bit this one time. Hopefully the purists out there won't tar and feather me! Anyway, tomorrow I will walk from here in North Pekin, IL to Banner, IL a distance of 18 miles. I have no idea where I am going to spend the night there. Anticipating dropping into Boss Hogs tavern there and inquire as to whether any of the patrons will let me set up my tent in their back yard. Rain forecasted for tomorrow as well. Yippie! Until tomorrow...

April 27 2014 - The Day Before

Its the day before I head out of Morton IL to take my first step in the journey of a million steps to find the soul of this nation and in the process become the Columbus of the continent of my soul as Thoreau so elegantly stated it in 1845. So many loose ends to tie up today. Geez. My new found friend and brother, Delmar Litwiller, prayed over me at Eli’s Coffee shop a few hours ago. What a guy. Gonna miss all my people in Morton! Well back to tying up loose ends. Ciao.
