After I spent the previous night in the Sedgwick County Jail courtesy of Sheriff Randy Peck I let myself out of my cell much like Otis used to do on the Andy Griffith Show and walked the 8 miles to Ovid, CO.
About a mile out of Ovid a cloudburst let loose directly above me on Rt 138 and needless to say my just washed clothes are all wet!
4 miles west of Julesberg I got stopped by a Sedgwick Deputy Sheriff who asked me what I was doing. Told him I busted out of the jail. He said, "Whaaat?"
I explained that I was the guest of his boss, Sheriff Peck. He then advised that a citizen called complaining because I was sitting up against a storage unit. Told the deputy the building afforded the only shade on this road so far. He then told me to be careful where I took breaks.
I arrived in Ovid a town of 200-300 people and walked into a small Mexican cafe. Two men at the bar asked me questions about where I was going, where I came from. So, I took my food and took a chair next to these two gentleman.
One guy was Joe the other Larry both Mexican-Americans in their fifties. They had just gotten off work as welders who worked in Sterling, CO.
Joe and I talked about life. He had 2 heart attacks, both parents died of heart attacks. He began crying when talking about his late mother.
He told he could take me to Sterling tonight if I go to the County Fair with him to pick up women. Told him I do not do that. He asked me if I was gay. Told him no I am not just don't do that because I am a follower of Christ. Are you very religious. I said yes...very.
Are you doing this trip for God? I said for God and for me too.
He then handed me $100 and picked up my restaurant tab and bought me a couple of Mexican Cokes!
Then we drove to Sterling and he dropped me off at Walmart to see if I could camp out there one night.
Joe and I said our goodbyes and I went inside and pleaded my case with Josh the new night manager. He at first said no but then relented when I told him I write a weekly column back home and explained to my readers back home how I have been treated.
I pitched my tent behind Walmart behind a spruce tree and spent a restless wet night.
Am at the local McDonalds charging my phone and writing my column.
Will stay one more night this time at Pioneer Park next door to Walmart.
Then its on to Merino, CO.
Pics are of the clouds that brought lightening/rain, Rafael, the bar tender and Joe.
